Valve cover breathers are located on top of the valve covers, in the oil-filling hole. They come in different sizes and shapes. To understand the operation of valve cover breathers it is important to know why they are used in the first place. All engines, being internal combustion mechanisms, are subject to thermal contraction and expansion. Even the earliest engines were recognized as having these characteristics, and planning and development had to address this phenomena into its design. Without this taken into account, the engine would suffer catastrophic failure as the engine's internal components expanded farther than the clearances and began to seize up.
When an engine is cold, all the components are contracted, or smaller in dimension, than they will be when they heat up. The pistons and rings in the cylinder block are quite loose when the engine is started.
There is significantly less available power, because a good percentage of the combustion will get past the loose piston rings and enter the crankcase or oil pan. As the engine quickly warms up, the pistons and rings, along with all the other components, begin to tighten up in the cylinder, and the available power increases.
The optimum operating temperature for maximum expansion is degrees F. When an engine exceeds about degrees F, the expansion becomes dangerous, as the parts lose all their clearance and are in danger of seizing. An engine also must deal with wear as the mileage builds. As the rings on the pistons wear, the engine begins to experience blow by. This happens when the rings are not tight enough to contain the explosions within the cylinders and the pressure passes the rings into the oil pan and block.
Herein lies the reason and function of the valve cover breathers.
The blow by builds up in the oil pan as the combustion passes the rings. As it fills the block, it must be evacuated.
If there is no way for this blow by to escape, the pressure would increase to the point that it would blow out gaskets in the engine. That is one function of the valve cover breathers--another is that it takes horsepower away from the engine when pressure exits in the block and the pistons' movement must work against this pressure. Another consideration is that with proper ventilation, the oil will stay cleaner longer.
The last major function is environmental. All engines, with the exception of race cars, have this blow by vented into the intake manifold to be re-burned rather than released to the atmosphere. The prerequisite for proper operation of a valve cover breather is first to allow the release of internal pressure in the engine to be vented to the intake manifold.
The second item is to have a design to prohibit any debris from entering the engine through the breather and to prevent oil in the valve cover from being sucked out of the valve cover by the suction of the intake manifold.
This is accomplished with a thin plate covering the bottom opening of the breather. The plate is shimmed to allow pressure to escape around the plate but keeps the oil from escaping. I was thinking to remove the pcv valve and the black box thing at the backblocking off the holes and making 2 vents of the valve cover to a catch can? Venting the valve cover and the approproate sized catch can IS the best set up. As for legality In any case, practically any mod we do to our car is illegal.

The internal diameter of the lines to the catch can are the same as stock. There's no real point of having them any bigger as the stock nipples are of that size anyway. For a street car that only sees the occassional track day, a larger can is not really necessary.

In my tests their was a linear load dependent vacuum drawn using this method. None to insignificant amount of vacuum drawn at idle and low load conditions, moderate load created 0. One does not need to use a check valve with this approach as their is never any reason for pressure to force its way into the crankcase.Every engine has some sort of crankcase breathing system.
The internal combustion process creates pressure, some of which makes its way past the piston rings-along with fuel vapors-and into the rest of the block. Without proper ventilation, seals can burst and oil can leak, and that's if the block doesn't implode on itself first.
Valve Cover Breather Filter
Oil can also become contaminated from excessive fuel vapors being introduced. A typical Honda crankcase ventilation system uses engine vacuum to draw contaminants out of the crankcase and reintroduce it back into the intake manifold for recycling.
It's known as the positive crankcase ventilation system PCVbut it isn't the most effective thing in the world. A PCV system takes into account performance and emissions, but with a big emphasis on emissions. It's supposed to reduce pressure.
In a perfect world, we'd like to see 0 psi in the crankcase but this just isn't the case with stock Honda engines. All Honda engines exhibit some sort of crankcase pressure and forced-induction applications are much worse, creating significant power-robbing pressure down below thanks to blow-by. Introducing vacuum into the crankcase reduces these windage losses, which can translate into better performance-ventilation equals power. This is the same principle that's behind dry sump systems, although on a much simpler scale.
In order to comply with emissions standards, modern PCV systems operate in a closed loop. This means that the oil vapors evacuated from the crankcase are reintroduced back into the combustion process. This is good for emissions reduction but introducing such gases back into the intake tract not only decreases performance but increases the likelihood of detonation. To understand the negative affects a PCV system can have all you need to do is look at all the gunk built up inside your throttle body and on your valves.
Small amounts of fuel seep past the piston rings during each compression stroke-this is just the nature of the internal combustion engine, but it can lead to thin and contaminated oil. The PCV system's job is to remove this unburnt mixture and keep it from further contaminating the oil. It's instead reintroduced into the intake stream long enough to contaminate things and spit out the exhaust. The specially designed one-way PCV valve allows crankcase evacuation to occur, although how well it works at wide-open throttle is arguably minimal.

Keep in mind though that most any method other than what the OEMs devised probably won't comply with emissions standards, although that doesn't mean they're exactly dirty.
The purpose of a breather tank is similar to a PCV setup except the breather tank simply stores the unwanted gases and blow-by rather than reintroducing them back into the intake stream. Eliminating the PCV system altogether and running an open breather setup is best suited for cars that spend a lot of time at wide-open throttle and is the one we'll discuss. Such engines don't need the vacuum assistance provided by the PCV since the engine produces little to no vacuum at wide-open throttle anyway.
An open breather setup like this is suitable for any high-performance engine with excessive blow-by when compared to, say, a bone-stock Accord.
The goal is to allow the gases to escape through the path of least resistance and not travel past the piston rings into the crankcase. As you'd expect, there are other methods and several ways of going about installing each of them. There are systems that rely on intake manifold vacuum, which doesn't solve the whole intake contamination problem since the gases we just evacuated are being reintroduced into the cylinders.
There are also systems that create vacuum effects by tapping into the intake or exhaust streams in opposing directions to flow as well as systems that use mechanical or electric vacuum pumps. All of these are a bit beyond the scope of the weekend mechanic though and are simply overkill for most any daily driver. The rule of thumb, is the larger the better. Larger diameter bung would cause your catch can to less likely fill up with oil. Because with larger bungs the velocity of the flumes is slower and less likely to carry oil with it. I order two 3ft lines Part SUM degree bends Once again get 2 90degree bends based on your hose size. Whatever location you weld your bungs to make sure you the OEM baffle is covering the area.
